10 Most Prominent Product Recalls of All Time
Product recalls are serious, and sometimes dangerous, things. When a product is recalled, it means there was either a safety or defect that could endanger the consumer. - Infantino's Baby Slings
These baby slings were recalled in 2010 after being linked to at least three infant deaths. The sling showed a risk of suffocation if the fabric was pressed against an infant's face.
- Toyota's Gas Pedals
More than 9 million Toyota vehicles were at risk of faulty gas pedals. That's almost as much as the total number of vehicles sold in 2009.
- Simplicity Cribs
After a tragic death to an 8-month-old child in Texas, a staggering 400,000 cribs made by Simplicity were recalled. The year before, 600,000 cribs were recalled, with one million cribs the year before.
- Milk Powder and Pet Food in China
China's largest milk prowder provider recalled 700 tons of baby formula. A chemical used to make plastic was found in the product, causing infant death and kidney problems. The same company used this product in 60 million cans of dog food the year before.
- Ford Pinto
The Ford automaker recalled 1.5 million vehicles in 1978. Though there were safety concerns, they let the car hit a consumer market anyway. The positioning of the fuel tank put the vehicle at risk of exploding if crash impact occured. The car was pulled from the market in 1981.
- Firestone Tires
16 years ago, the tire industry had significant troubles. Firestone, Inc. recalled 6.5 million tires, making it one of the most dangerous product flaws in auto history. The tread on the tires was peeling off, causing the tires to blow out on the road. This led to 175 deaths and over 700 injuries.
- California Slaughterhouse
A California slaughterhouse was accused of improper butchering techniques, leading to a recall of 143 million pounds of beef. At the time of this unfortunate recall, it was the largest meat recall in history.
- Peanut Corp. of America
This massive peanut recall impacted products like peanut butter, canned nuts, ice cream, and anything that contained peanuts from this company. They were found to have mold in the lining the walls and ceilings of their factory, and the FDA also found evidence of the company wilfully distributing products containing salmonella.
- Extra-Strength Tylenol
Tylenol laced with potassium cyanide hit the market in 1982 causing 7 Chicago deaths. The crime caused citywide panic for days and instigated others to copy the crime. Johnson & Johnson spent millions recalling their product from stores and the crime has never been solved.
- Vioxx Arthritis Medication
Merck pharmaceutical company pulled Vioxx from the market when it produced an increase in heart attacks and strokes in patients. The company paid billions of dollars to settle the 27,000 lawsuits filed.
