Tuesday, May 9, 2017 started off with a twist as a school bus driver was struck by a motor vehicle near downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana. The car was driving slightly left of center, ultimately hitting a school bus traveling in the opposite direction.
The school bus driver lost control of the large vehicle and was sent off the road crashing into a house. The bus drove through the porch and the front area of the house.
Thankfully, no students were aboard the bus and all of the home's residents were in a back room and not impacted by the crash. In fact, no one involved in the crash had to seek medical attention.
Though the car was severely damaged, school officials reported that the school bus did not take severe damage. The same cannot be said for the house that took the brunt of the accident. As the bus backed out of the house, the roof collapsed. Unfortunately the house had to be condemned.
It's unsettling to think about the outcome of this accident being different. For all intensive purposes, everyone was very lucky. If students had been in the school bus or if the family had been in the front room of the house, more severe injuries and possibly death could have been an outcome. This particular situation serves as a warning to drivers, motor vehicle drivers and school bus drivers alike, to pay attention to the road and look out for the best interest of others while driving.
