It’s easy to look at Winter like it’s the Big Bad Wolf of the seasons. Depending on where you live, you may feel like Winter is lurking around every slippery street corner waiting for you to slip and fall, leaving you with bruised body parts and self-esteem. Yes, it is important to take extra caution during the Winter months, especially extra caution when driving anywhere. However, these snowy days can be filled with extreme fun, as well!
Winter is a great time to test out your adventurous side. Snowboarding, cross-country and downhill skiing, snow-shoeing, ice skating, sledding, and many other Winter sports provide entertainment and excitement. It is so thrilling to jump into a soft pile of freshly fallen snow, or ball it up in your fists and hurl a snowball at your friends. If you really want the upper-hand, you could even build a snow fortress to protect your team from the flying snow!
Lots of memories can be made in the snow. It’s important to remember, though, that with snow, comes slippery ground conditions, cold temperatures, and potential for injury. Here at Boughter Sinak, LLC, we want to encourage you to take the necessary steps to stay safe while you’re outside this Winter.
No Exposed Skin
This may sound extreme, but like the title says, we’re encouraging “extreme safety”. Exposed skin is hazardous because it leaves you vulnerable to frostbite and hypothermia. Too much exposure to the cold air can cause your body temperature to drop, or your skin to acquire frostbite. It’s best to wear several layers and be prepared.
Don’t Play Alone
Playing Winter sports is not as fun without a group of friends, and it’s much safer to have people around you in case an injury occurs. Spending time with friends and having people around make for a win-win situation.
Know your Surroundings
It’s thrilling and fun to explore, but be sure to know your surroundings before you explore too far. With snow covering the ground, it can be difficult to tell the difference between an open field, or a snow covered pond with thin ice. All it takes is one wrong step and you could be in danger. Be smart when you choose your adventure area.
Don’t be a Tough Guy (or Girl)
Staying out in the cold can seem like a right of passage, especially if none of your friends seem to be ready to go inside. If you’re cold, feeling tired or hungry, and want to warm up, you should go inside. It can be tempting to stay outside all day, but don’t ignore your body’s signals.
Go Easy on the Tricks
Snowboarding and skiing are extremely fun Winter sports and you don’t have to be an “expert” to try it out. However, make sure to fully understand the techniques before attempting something you’ve never done before. It can be easy to injure bones or muscles, or even get a concussion if you’re practicing these sports without prior knowledge.
As we said before, Winter is a time for extreme fun, but make sure that fun is backed up by the proper safety measures. This goes for states without snow, too. Boughter Sinak, LLC hasn’t seen too much snow in Indiana this season, but it’s still just as important to follow these safety measures.
