With the holidays approaching, is a hoverboard on your child’s wish list? If so, you may want to do your research. On November 14th, thousands of units in a variety of different brands were recalled do to a risk of fire and explosion. A number of different brands have been included in the recall:

  • Sonic Smart Wheels
  • Tech Drift
  • iLive
  • iHoverspeed
  • Go Wheels
  • Drone Nerds
  • Smart Balance Wheel

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, owners of these products should discontinue use immediately and contact the store from which they purchased the board for further instructions on reimbursement, replacement, or store credit.

The danger present in these specific self-balancing scooters and hoverboards lies in the lithium-ion battery packs. The hazard is described as follows:  “The lithium-ion battery packs in the self-balancing scooters/hoverboards can overheat, posing a risk of the products smoking, catching fire and/or exploding.”
