A Fort Wayne man was struck by a vehicle as he was walking in Auburn early on September 15, 2017.

Auburn Police and medical personnel were notified around 5:30 a.m. that a pedestrian had been injured on the 4200 block of C.R. 35 in northeast Auburn, IN. Officers found Brandon W. Craven, 33, down and unconscious, and suffering from “multiple injuries,” according to Auburn Police. He was then airlifted to Parkview Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

Investigators are determining whether Craven was walking in the roadway or if he walked in front of the 2006 Chevy Equinox that struck him, driven by Ariel Lynn Smith, 19, of Kendallville. Police noted in a news release that they are investigating “alcohol impairment on the part of Craven.” According to police, there were no streetlights in the area of the crash and it was dark at the time the incident took place. Smith was not injured in the incident.

Indiana State Police were notified and called to the scene to reconstruct the crash, Auburn Police said. County Road 35 between Wesley Road and Morningstar Road was closed for approximately three hours.
